We have just completed the filming of four tools that can be used by secondary school teachers to support students’ mental health. Part of the exercises, include self-reflections from the students on their behaviours, thoughts, feelings and unmet needs.
For some young people this is challenging. Many of the young people we work with in Tottenham, one of the poorest boroughs in London, have challenges that are at a systemic level. Some young people do not have the opportunities that many others take for granted; breakfast, lunch, dinner, a stable, safe family home, to name but a few.
We build relationships with the young people over time, sharing unconditional and non-judgmental positive regard, understanding that for them, to stay in the room is enough. They have too many of their basic needs not being met to even consider any other needs that they may have.
For those that work with young people, what have you found? What supports young people to be self-reflective?
