Photographing Feelings at Alexandra Palace

Our exhibition of Photographing Feelings opened with a private view at Alexandra Palace.

The conversations with the young people made it unforgettable for me.

“Wow – that sounds really good,” a young man said to me, as he read the text accompanying his photograph. “I’m glad you like it – they’re your words, I replied. He looked at me confused.

“Did I actually write that?”

He couldn’t quite believe that the words that moved him were his own. He was reflecting on the experience of his life, the decisions he’d made and how he found himself where he is.

The sentiment is powerful and human and utterly relatable – especially when life catches us in the most unexpected circumstances.

Photography is a powerful medium and I know that today a few more young people walk a little taller, with a bit more pride, able to acknowledge their own work, and I hope with a little more optimism for their future.

A shout out to the brilliant team at Alexandra Palace and Jen Blackwood and her team, the very brilliant Wayne Campbell for inspiring the young people by sharing his incredible talent for activism through photography Laura Katan for ensuring the group could witness and celebrate their success and for the committed team I am so proud to be a part of deep:black with Kamal Magecha Jennifer Dru Lea Meisel and the wonderful Michele Guimarin at North Central London ICB who makes it possible year after year.

This work makes a difference and it was a joy to see that on the faces of the young people today.

The work is at Alexandra Palace in the Creative Pavillion until Monday 23rd June if you are able to catch it.
